In the Madhesh Province, 183 incidents of violence against women occurred within three months.

Simara: In the Madhes Province, there has been an increase in incidents of violence against women over the past three months.
According to a report made public by the Women’s Rehabilitation Center (WOREC), an organization that has been working in the social sector for a long time, a total of 183 incidents of violence against women were registered between October and December 2025.
According to the press release issued by the organization, the majority of these incidents were cases of domestic violence, with 141 women (77.05 percent) being victims of violence within their own homes.
In addition, 26 cases of social violence, eight cases of sexual violence, five cases of murder, two cases of cybercrime, and one other incident of violence were recorded.
In the context of WOREC regularly collecting and analyzing data on violence against women, this time the data was collected from primary sources in the districts of Dhanusha, Mahottari, and Sarlahi.
Out of the total 183 incidents, 178 were collected directly from women, youth, and adolescent groups, while five incidents were taken from local newspapers.

According to the data, most of the violence occurs within the home and is perpetrated by family members, making the foundation of women’s security precarious. The situation of legal rights of women and children is also deplorable. According to the collected data, out of 183 women, 107 were deprived of their right to citizenship, and 92 women’s marriages were not registered.
This had a direct impact on their children as well. Similarly, 39 children were deprived of their right to birth registration, and 17 women were deprived of basic nutrition and food facilities, as reported.
In Madhes, the wrong social practice of only making citizenship after marriage has resulted in women affected by violence being deprived of legal identity, and as a result, their dependent children are not getting essential services like education, health, and nutrition.

The main reasons behind violence against women in Madhes are found to be dowry, marriage under family pressure, giving birth to a daughter, and prejudice against beauty, which are cultural and traditional.
Due to such outdated thinking and bad culture, women are being subjected to physical as well as mental and social torture. WOREC’s report has made it clear that government and non-government agencies need to take more effective steps for women’s rights and security in the Madhes Province.
