Birgunj: The industrial city Birgunj is preparing to take a historic leap in waste management.

With the state-of-the-art plastic waste processing plant under construction at the metropolitan municipality’s dumping site entering its final stages. Birgunj’s waste will soon cease to be merely a ‘problem’ and will start being transformed into a ‘resource.’

Aligned with the long-term goal of making the metropolis clean, green, and pollution-free, the project can scientifically process about 20 metric tons of the roughly 60–65 tons of waste collected daily, converting plastic waste into reusable material.

This ambitious project has also become an excellent example of a public–private partnership. The plant, being built by Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. with an investment of around four crore rupees, was established under a tripartite agreement between Birgunj Metropolitan City, Zero Waste Initiative Nepal, and Surya Nepal.

Last Wednesday, Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh and a team including Surya Nepal’s industry head Suresh Kaji Maharjan inspected the construction site and received briefings on the technical aspects and operational procedures.

Once construction is complete the plant will be handed over to the metropolitan government, while technical management will be handled by Zero Waste Initiative Nepal under a defined division of responsibilities.

Suresh Kaji Maharjan, head of industries at Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd., said the company invested in the project as part of its social responsibility. According to him, the company joined the project with a commitment to be responsible toward society and the environment alongside its profit-driven business.

Once the plant is operational, a significant reduction in plastic pollution is expected, the lifespan of the dumping site should increase, and the city’s appearance will gain a new dimension.

Through scientific sorting and modern processing methods, Birgunj is now preparing to present an exemplary model for the country in waste management.
